UNDERSTAND YOUR VISION

More than a change in your prescription.

Keratoconus makes the cornea thinner and more irregular, affecting how light focuses inside the eye. It can affect the two eyes differently. Corneal imaging helps the specialist assess its shape and plan care.

Changes you may notice

  • Blurred or distorted vision
  • Frequent prescription changes
  • Increasing astigmatism
  • Glare or light sensitivity

Symptoms alone do not establish a diagnosis.

TREATMENT EXPLAINED

Different treatments. Different purposes.

01

Improve visual clarity

Glasses or specialized contact lenses may help improve vision. They do not serve the same purpose as treatment intended to control progression.

02

Assess corneal cross-linking

Cross-linking uses riboflavin and ultraviolet light to strengthen corneal tissue. Its main aim is to slow or stop progression in suitable cases, not to promise freedom from glasses.

03

Consider intracorneal ring segments

Small implants can reshape the cornea in selected cases. Your specialist determines suitability and whether another treatment should be combined with them.

GOOD QUESTIONS. CLEARER DECISIONS.

Before you decide.

Do all patients need surgery?

No. The decision depends on the stage, evidence of progression, corneal measurements and visual needs. Your assessment is the starting point.

Should I send tests before traveling?

Optiláser requests corneal topography for international keratoconus enquiries. The corneal specialist reviews the available information to guide treatment planning and the proposed length of stay.

Can I travel for a corneal transplant?

Under Optiláser’s current international-patient protocol, corneal transplantation is not offered to foreign nationals. Colombian nationals living abroad should ask the team to confirm eligibility and availability before planning travel.

Will cross-linking restore normal vision?

Its primary aim is to control progression. You may still need glasses or contact lenses, and visual results vary. The specialist will discuss expected benefits and limitations.

How many days should I plan in Bogotá?

There is no single itinerary for keratoconus. Your specialist must recommend the stay based on the treatment and follow-up you need.

What should I ask about treatment risks?

Ask about healing, discomfort, infection, visual changes and whether additional treatment could be needed. The discussion should cover your specific procedure and eye measurements.
